Pakistan asks UNSC to show 'sense of urgency' in settling Palestinian issue

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 24 (APP): Regretting past failures to bring peace to the Middle East, Pakistan has called on the international community to intensify efforts for a political settlement leading to creation of a viable Palestinian State.

"This year – the year 2013 – is crucial," Pakistani Ambassador Masood Khan, who is also president of the Security Council for the month of January. said. "If relevant actors do not take action now, the two-State solution may not remain viable," he warned in speech he delivered in his national capacity on Wednesday.

Pakistan calls for boosting efforts to resolve festering disputes to combat terrorism

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 15 (APP): Pakistan Tuesday called for defeating the "hydra-headed monster" of terrorism through a comprehensive approach that gives a push to efforts aimed at resolving long-festering conflicts and crises spawning extremism.

"We should address the root causes of terrorism," Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar told the U.N. Security Council, which met under her presidentship. Pakistan holds the presidency of the 15-member Council, the U.N.'s most powerful body, for the month of January.

Pakistan assumes UN Security Council Presidency on January 1, 2013

New York, December 31, 2012: Pakistan assumes presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2013.Ambassador Masood Khan, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will formally assume the Presidency on January 1.

Pakistan was elected last year as a non-permanent member of the 15-member body. This is for the first time that Pakistan is assuming its rotational office of the UN Security Council Presidency during the present two-year term.
