Islamabad(Staff Reporter)UNIDO office in Pakistan kick started its event for sharing the joys of UNIDO’s 50 years of existence by cake cutting done by Federal Secretary at UNIDO office. Secretary of Ministry of Industry inaugurates the launching ceremony of UNIDO 50th anniversary celebrations. Created in 1966 as a special organ of the United Nations General Assembly, started its functioning in Pakistan 40 years ago promoting SMEs, entrepreneurship, fostering nationwide Industrial Development, productivity enhancement, particularly to accelerate inclusive and sustainable development.

Present on the occasion UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan and UNIDO Representative along with his team and a group of intellectual beneficiaries who participated in the event from different regions of the country. The event featured salient presentations explaining the existing portfolio of various UNIDO projects underway in Pakistan which mostly are in the area of industrial development, trade capacity building, renewable energy and environment. The UNIDO team also briefed on the upcoming projects indicating the multiple and diverse areas such as agro food, which the UNIDO is perusing now.

The high point of the event was brief presentations of success stories explained by their innovators (Project Beneficiaries) themselves. The Secretary was also briefed that these innovations have already been presented at local and international forums and some of them have been recognized not only through international awards they have won but by the level of interest showed in their technologies by private entrepreneurs from within and outside Pakistan.

The intellectual UNIDO beneficiaries explaining their constraints to the Secretaryto commercialization of their products indicated lack of venture capital and Government support to sustain their businesses. The Secretary ensured all his support not only from Ministry of Industry and Production but also to link these innovators and startup companies with other relevant ministries for support. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Khizar, Secretary of Industries lauded the role of UNIDO especially in the Industrial development process in Pakistan, he particularly appreciated UNIDO for creating such platform to incubate their innovation and scaling them up into sustainable businesses.

Mr. Neil Buhne UN-RC congratulated UNIDO on completing their 50 years following their mission very effectively and said  UNIDO is promoting not only the SDG 9; Industry, Innovation and infrastructure, which directly falls in their domain but we also appreciate their contributions to other SDGs.

Mr. Esam Alqararah share his gratitude to federal secretary and the Resident Coordinator for joining and being very cooperative throughout. . He also thanked all beneficiaries who travelled from long distance and joined UNIDO in happy occasion to celebrate the 50 years inaugural ceremony.
