OSLO, Sept 3 (DNA) -The overseas Pakistanis are a great asset for our country and they have assisted us in every crisis, whether it is tragic earth quake or gigantic floods in the country. This was stated by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira, while addressing an august gathering of overseas Pakistanis here today.
The foreign exchange remittances and investment in Pakistan by our overseas brethren are playing a vital role in reviving and stabilizing the economy of Pakistan, he added. The government is working on granting the right to caste vote and the right to be elected in the parliament to the overseas Pakistanis, he further stated, says a press release received here today from Norway.
During his speech, the Minister said that in 2008, when the current democratic government came in power, the war against terrorism was the major issue in the country and the Talban had established their control in Swat. Moreover, our economy was in shatters, we had to import wheat, sugar and other necessary food items to cater to the demand in the country. Internationally Pakistan’s image was damaged and it was loosing its friends in the international community.
However, now the situation is totally different and the conditions of our country have improved a lot. Our armed forces have successfully defended Swat and other tribal areas and they have defeated the terrorist on many fronts with the support of the masses and the government. Our armed forces and masses have sacrificed their lives and properties in the war against terrorism and the Pakistan Peoples Party has also lost many workers and even its leader, Mohterma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, in this fight. On the economic front, the Minister added that during the tenure of current democratic government the size of GDP has doubled and we have surplus wheat, sugar and other necessary food items.
Pakistan has graduated from a authoritarian regression to democratic consolidation in last four and half years. The country has been anchored efficiently by the President Asif Ali Zardari out of mess created by last regime. However, still there is a long way to go which needs concerted efforts by everybody.
The function was organized by an overseas Pakistanis organization, ‘Overseas Welfare Foundation Norway’ with regard to Independence Day of Pakistan.
