Islamabad; 16 May 2013 { Commerce Reporter } Internationally recognized accreditation of six laboratories of the National Physical and Standard Laboratory (NPSL) will foster the metrological activities not only in the country but also in the region.

This was stated by Mr. Shaheen Raja, Director General, NPSL on the occasion of the visit to these laboratories by the Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, Mr. Lars-Gunnar Wigemark.

This visit was part of the World Metrology Day celebrations, highlighting major achievements of NPSL for its internationally traceable measurement services for the industry and overall quality infrastructure development which has been embarked upon with the support of European Union's funded Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA II) programme being implemented by UNIDO.

Mr. Bruno Valanzuolo, Chief Technical Advisor, TRTA II programme, Mr. Kauser Zaidi, Director PITAD/ Ministry of Commerce, Development Advisor of the EU Delegation, Director General of NPSL and representatives of the Ministry of Science & Technology were also present at the occasion.

The newly accredited labs, visited by Mr. Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, included: Thermal Metrology, Pressure Metrology, Electrical Metrology, Dimensional Metrology, Chemical Metrology and Mass Metrology. He appreciated NPSL’s hard work for achieving the Accreditation Certificate.

During his visit to the laboratories of the National Physical and Standard Laboratory (NPSL), Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, Mr. Lars-Gunnar Wigemark said that the trade development programme funded by the EU supports the economic integration of Pakistan into the global economy by allowing Pakistan's industry to meet international metrological standards. It should also stimulate employment creation by increasing exports. In the long run, by adopting the international metrological standards and other trade compliance measures should also support sustainable development and poverty reduction in Pakistan.

The DG (NPSL) said that it is worth mentioning the support of the EU funded TRTA programmes provided throughout, especially in provision of E1 class set of masses, a very precise Mass comparator (Balance) and the installation of Environmental Conditioning System (ECS) in the refurbished labs and accreditation by Norwegian Accreditation Body.

Mr. Bruno added that this support from the European Union and TRTA II programme will not only expand the metrological activities in the country but will also pave the way for Pakistan’s desire of having free access to the European markets. The TRTA II programme is also supporting NPSL for establishing a National Proficiency Testing Scheme to provide service to the microbiology and chemical testing laboratories in Pakistan.
