Spokesperson of Presidency Ertuğ: “Addressee of Anastasiadis at the negotiation table is Turkish Cypriot side, particularly our President”

Spokesperson of TRNC Presidency Osman Ertuğ criticized the comment of Greek Cypriot leadership that visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to TRNC is disappointing, and said “We want to remind that addressee of Anastasiadis at the negotiation table is the Turkish Cypriot side, particularly our President”.

In a written statement, Osman Ertuğ stated that reaction of the Greek Cypriot side, particularly leader of Greek Cypriot side Anastasiadis against the official visit of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the TRNC is ‘strange as much as exemplary’.

Ertuğ added: “In his first visit to the TRNC as a president, Turkish President Erdoğan has put forth Turkey’s peaceful, reconciliatory and proactive policy towards TRNC again and he emphasized his full support to the sincere efforts made by the Turkish Cypriots. If there is someone who is disappointed because of this, they are those who do not want a just and lasting agreement in Cyprus.”

Vasiliu: “Key words for reunification in Cyprus are forgiveness and reconciliation”

Former leader of Greek Cypriot administration Yorgo Vasiliu expressed that a solution in Cyprus should be based on ‘forgiveness and reconciliation’ and said “United Cyprus can be established by forgiving and reconciliation. The key words for reunification of the island are those mentioned above”.

Vasiliu stated that the divergences between the sides at the ongoing negotiations are smaller than it is thought and added that when the leaders come up with an agreement text, both communities will vote ‘YES’ to this text in a referendum. Emphasizing “If struggle was not given for Enosis by Greek Cypriots, the island would not be in this situation now”, Vasiliu stated that the time passes disadvantageously and since the problem is not solved everything goes worse.

Former leader added: “At the end, as the time passes, Greek Cypriots have understood that they cannot administrate the Turkish Cypriots and that in an agreement to be made both sides will politically be equal” and he said that the young people who were born after 1974 consider that the future of the country is reunification.
