Luxembourg - Advisor to PM Pakistan on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz Meets with High Representative Federica Mogherini on sidelines of ASEM in Luxembourg

Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz held a meeting with High Representative of European Union Federica Mogherini on the sidelines of 12th Foreign Ministers' meeting of Asia Europe Meeting(ASEM) in Luxembourg yesterday and discussed bilateral issues and situation in the region.

The Foreign Office Spokesperson, in a statement in Islamabad, said the High Representative of European Union in the meeting emphasized Pakistan's role in bringing peace to Afghanistan and promoting meaningful dialogue between Taliban and the Afghan government.
Sartaj Aziz briefed Mrs. Federica Mogherini on the positive developments of the past two years, including continuing strengthening of the democratic process, revival of the economy and decisive action on terrorism.

The two agreed that these positive developments will further improve the opportunities for trade and investment in Pakistan. The current level of trade between Pakistan and Europe had already crossed 11 billion US dollars especially after the GSP+ status which commenced from January 2014.

Mrs Mogherini mentioned that review of GSP+ in the first two years will be undertaken in the beginning of 2016 and emphasized the importance of adequate implementation of the requirements especially adherence to the 27 UN Conventions on Human Rights, labour standards and climate change.

The two sides discussed the problems arising from the large flow of refugees in Europe from Syria, Iraq and other countries. In this context
Mrs Mogherini pointed out the unexpected addition of economic migrants from some countries including Pakistan and Afghanistan. They agreed on the need to further streamline the procedure for the implementation of EU Readmission Agreement between Pakistan and EU concluded in 2010 so that illegal migrants once identified can be deported.

Sartaj Aziz briefed Mrs. Mogherini on efforts being made to pursue its policy of peaceful neighbourhood, improved regional connectivity and efforts being made to improve relations with India through sustained dialogue.

Mrs. Mogherini accepted the invitation of the Advisor to visit Pakistan in early 2016 for the 3rd Strategic Dialogue between Pakistan and EU.
